A Few Thoughts on John MacArthur and YRR
In my immediately preceding post, I made reference to the first of a series of blog posts that John MacArthur plans to write and post at the Grace To You blog dealing with what is referred to as the New Calvinism or the Young, Restless, Reformed [YRR] movement. I expressed my great delight in Dr. MacArthur taking on this issue because I know that he will address it from a thoroughly Biblical point of view. His first post is clear evidence of this. For what it may be worth, I would like to explain why I believe that Dr. MacArthur is most definitely the man for this job of laying words of necessary correction out before those involved in the YRR. MacArthur on YRR
Last week I mentioned that Dr. John MacArthur was going to be writing a series of posts on the Grace To You blog about what is commonly referred to as the New Calvinism or the Young, Restless, Reformed movement. I have eagerly awaited these articles by Dr. MacArthur because, as a Calvinist, there is much that I see in the YRR that is very, very troubling. MacArthur’s first article is now online and it is an excellent treatment of the adolescent irreverence that tends to characterize the YRR. In fact, this immature and juvenile behavior seems to be a badge of honor that they proudly wear and anyone who dares to challenge is immediately labeled a legalist or some other such term. Good Reads for the Day
I came across several very good blog posts recently that I would like to share. The first is from Jesse Johnson of The Cripplegate and it addresses the CJ Mahaney issue that I mentioned a short while ago. It is an excellent article that gets to the very heart of the matter.
Jesse Johnson is the Outreach Pastor and an elder at Grace Community Church in Los Angeles, CA.
You may read Jesse’s article here.
The other blog post that I found to be particularly helpful is by Tim Challies and it is a review of a newly released DVD promoting the Family Integrated Church movement. I tend to shy away from Challies because of his lack of discernment in promoting/supporting questionable individuals such as Mark Driscoll, but I did find his review of this DVD to be excellent and on target.
You may read Tim’s review here.
Edit: Over at the Grace to You site, Pastor-Teacher John MacArthur is beginning a series of blog posts dealing with the issue of new Calvinism [the Young, Restless, Reformed crowd]. I am very much looking forward to this series of posts as Dr. MacArthur is going to address the “immaturity, instability, and inconsistency in the YRR movement.” These are issues that have been of great concern to me, so I am very thankful that MacArthur is going to address them and I am certain he will do so in a thoroughly Biblical fashion.

A Closer Look at Luke 9.23
For the past year or so I have been constantly drawn back to and challenged by the words of our Lord Jesus Christ in Luke 9.23:
And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. (Luk 9:23 NAS)
C.J. Mahaney Takes Leave of Absence
C.J. Mahaney–pastor, author, and president of Sovereign Grace Ministries–has announced here that he is taking a leave of absence from Sovereign Grace Ministries for the purpose of focusing on some areas of sin in his life that have been brought to his attention. What he writes about the issue is a wonderful expression of humility and an example all believers would do well to follow.
Book Review: John MacArthur Biography
What an incredible combination: a biography of John MacArthur written by Iain Murray. A biography of my favorite contemporary Pastor-Teacher written by my favorite biographer-church historian. When I first heard of this project I was filled with excitement and eager anticipation. Having just finished reading the book, my expectations were not disappointed, except in one regard and that is that this work is an overview of MacArthur’s life rather than an exhaustive biographical account. That, however, is by design as author Murray states: Continue reading
Hard to Believe or Not?
I am currently enjoying the great and wonderful privilege of leading the men of Sovereign Grace Bible Chapel, the church I serve as Pastor-Teacher, in a study of John MacArthur’s outstanding book Hard to Believe. This book is a Biblically based challenge to the modern-day heresy of easy believism. It is certainly one of MacArthur’s finest books and one I highly recommend. The whole premise of the book and our study is that many people have shied away from sharing the Biblical Gospel because it is so hard and offensive and have replaced it with a so-called gospel that easy and inoffensive. What gospel do you believe and present? Continue reading
Repentance Revisited
In the past I have written several articles on the matter of repentance and the Gospel. My contention is that the clear teaching of Scripture is that a gospel of no repentance is no gospel. In other words, if we are going to give someone an accurate and faithful presentation of the Biblical Gospel, we must let the person with whom we are sharing know that their response to the Gospel must include repentance. If they do not repent of their sins, they will not be saved. Continue reading
Al Mohler Shows That the Apple Really Does Not Fall from the Tree
Do you remember Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker? They were the husband-wife television evangelist team who founded PTL and bilked followers out of millions of dollars. They were nothing but sick-tongued snake oil salesmen who conned people out of their money. Jim was convicted and served time in prison for his crimes. Al Mohler has an interesting article on Jay Bakker, the son of Jim and Tammy Faye. Jay is the co-pastor of Revolution Church in New York City and the author of the book Fall to Grace. Good Reads for the Day
I came across a few good articles this morning that I would like to share with you. It is always encouraging to come across good articles on the web in light of the fact that so much of what people post is less than worthless. Continue reading
Monday Morning Reading
Here are the links to a few rather interesting reads I came across this morning:
Jamin Hubner at Alpha and Omega Ministries has an interesting article entitled A Lesser-Known Heretic That You Should Know About. The article is about Pastor Joel Finck who is one of the leaders of the Hyper-Dispensationalism movement. It is a very good article dealing with a subject of which I had very little previous knowledge.
You may read the article here.
Over at the Grace To You blog Phil Johnson has some great posts on the topic of gambling.
